Washington Center for Nursing

Diversity Initiative

Increasing the racial and ethnic diversity of nursing students and faculty in Washington is one of the priorities identified in the Implementation Recommendations to the Master Plan for Nursing Education in Washington State. Specific action steps proposed are:
  • Disseminate WCN’s Diversity issue briefings (see sidebar) to relevant audiences
  • Develop effective and sustainable initiatives that provide financial support to minority nursing students
  • Implement mentoring programs and state-wide networks for minority faculty
  • Develop strategic alliances with minority nursing organizations
  • Organize a statewide summit and a series of workshops on diversity in nursing and nursing education.

Our recent focus has been on the following projects:
  • Dissemination of Diversity issue briefings (see sidebar)
  • Compilation of resources for minority nurses
  • Survey of WA State nursing programs regarding faculty diversity
  • Participation in the Oregon Center for Nursing’s conference “Nurturing Cultural Competence in Nursing: Promising Practices for Education and Healthcare” (11/2010)
  • Fundraising for the position of Program Director, Diversity Initiatives
