Master Plan for Nursing Education

WCN developed the Master Plan for Nursing Education in Washington State (MPNE) in 2008. Since then we have been promoting its implementation based on the following priorities:
- Reduce the nursing faculty shortage by implementing strategies that address faculty preparation, workload and compensation.
- Develop innovative curriculum models and teaching strategies that are consistent with national accreditation and practice guidelines through dialogue among nursing education, practice, research and policy.
- Promote the introduction of formal, structured transition to practice programs for new nurses in all practice settings.
- Implement strategies to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of nursing students and faculty in Washington.
Our recent focus has been on the following projects:
Faculty Shortage
Transition to Practice
- Toolkit for Transition to Practice Programs.
- Survey of Washington State hospitals regarding Transition to Practice programs, or elements of such programs, currently in place.
- Regular monitoring of health care organizations for TTP programs
Innovative Curriculum Models
- Support for the Council on Nursing Education in Washington (CNEWS) in moving towards common prerequisites for Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs.
- Established common prerequsists for all community colleges offering the Associates of Apllied Science Transfer degree
Diversity
See also Diversity Initiative.
In addition, we launched a new initiative on the Nurse of the Future:
- Regional stakeholder meetings across the state to discuss the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for nurses entering the profession and as they progress through their careers.
