Washington Center for Nursing

Survey

Transition-to-Practice programs (also called residency or on-boarding programs) are widely recognized as an important tool to help new nurses make the transition into the nursing workforce. Their value has been well documented in the literature.

The implementation recommendations for the Master Plan for Nursing Education in Washington State also called for the promotion of formal, structured Transition-to-Practice programs for new nurses in all practice settings.

In order to better evaluate the current situation and needs regarding such programs in Washington State, a subcommittee of the Washington Center for Nursing’s Transition-to-Practice workgroup developed a detailed survey that
was distributed to 98 hospitals in May 2010.
